Name: Anu Vares

Sporting background: Sport has been an integral
part of Anu’s life as both her parents were involved in sports coaching. Her
preferred choice of sport is Athletics – in particular the discus
throw, but did represent her high school in basketball. She was a
member of the Estonian National Athletics Team from 1994 – 1999 and
the Youth Team of the Baltic States from 1994 to 1997 and has won 20 medals
at the Estonian Championship in discus and shot put.
Profession: Civil Servant. Anu graduated from Tartu
University in 2002 with a BA in Public Relations and was employed as a
Public Relations Officer in the Saaremaa County Environmental Department
before joining the Saaremaa County Government as an adviser to the County
Governor March 2005. Anu is a member of the Board of the B7 Baltic
Islands Network and a member of both the Advisory Board of the Saaremaa
Enterprise Development Foundation and the Saaremaa County Health Council.
Hobbies besides sport: Travelling, reading and watching
TV.
Vision for the future of the IGA: Anu has always
been very impressed by the dedication of all parties – athletes, officials,
organisers, sponsors, volunteers and spectators – have towards the
Games and hopes that the number of Islanders able to participate in a Games
in whatever capacity continues to increase; as the value of the Games is
not only the sport and competition but the act of bringing together and
creating a meeting place for Islanders from all over the world. The
20-year history of the Games has proved that the universal language of
sport and friendship can successfully unite all who attend the Games.
IGA History: Anu’s involvement with the Games began
in 2001 when she became the Island Secretary for the Saaremaa Island Games
Association and continued when she also competed in the discus throw in both
the 2003 and 2005 NatWest Island Games winning the gold medal in both Games. Anu
found the experience of being a competitor and an official at the same Games
has enabled her to experience the Games from different perspectives.
