Report from the Executive Committee

Dear Island Friends,

Three months have passed since the AGM in the Isle of Man and I would like to report on the actions taken by the Executive Committee during this time:

  • A new contract of employment has been agreed with Kay Batty. Her contract has been extended for three years, September 1st 2001 – December 31st 2004. Kay will work 20 hours per week, 3 hours more than under her previous contract.

  • A project contract has been agreed with Gary Jakeman. Using his experience as Games Administrator for the 2001 Games he will:

    • identify problem areas which need to be addressed

    • undertake a review of all the Sports Technical Committee's and suggest areas for improvement.

    • prepare a draft programme for a seminar for the Sports Technical Committee's in July 2002

    • consider consistency between sports within the Games

    • identify problems with Entry Dates and suggest solutions

A report will be made to the Executive Committee in March 2002.

The contract covers the period October 1st 2001 – March 31st 2002.

  • A work group for a review of the Constitution has been appointed, consisting of:

    • Ven. Brian Partington, Chairman

    • Geoff Karran,

    • Gary Jakeman,

    • Kay Batty, Secretary

  • The experience within this group, regarding different aspects of constitutional matters, is exceptional.

  • The aim is to look into the possibilities of simplifying the Constitution and to discover any inconsistencies. The group will also consider if a certain amount of discretion should be introduced, regarding the interpretation of the Constitution, to allow the EC to make exceptions on particular matters.

  • In his project Gary Jakeman will also work on problems related to the interpretation of the Constitution. This will be an asset to the work group.

  • An interim report with recommendations will be discussed at the next EC meeting. A final report should be made to the AGM in July 2002.

  • EC Member Jorgen Pettersson has been asked to prepare a Media Strategy. News Releases and the IGA Website are important means for distributing information which should be used more efficiently.

  • Member Islands should be able to use the IGA Website to find information about what is going on in their islands.

  • EC Member James Johnston has been asked to prepare a Strategy for the NatWest Coaching Fund and to identify any potential problems within Island sports. The solutions must match the problems and therefore should we consider dividing the scheme into different areas? More precise criteria's will be considered.

  • A report will be made at the next EC meeting.

  • Any changes would need to be approved by our sponsor, NatWest offshore.

  • In a letter to me John Harris, NatWest offshore stated that he has been "authorised to exercise our right of first option to continue the sponsorship, at this stage by entering into negotiations with the IGA regarding the terms of an extension to the contract to cover the Shetland Games in 2005".

  • Next week the Treasurer Eric Legg and I will meet with John Harris and Julie McLoughlin in Jersey to begin these negotiations.

The EC will discuss his report at the next meeting.

Kind regards
