Bailiff starts count down
to the
2003 NatWest Island Games
Sir
de Vic Carey, the Bailiff of Guernsey, officially started the countdown
to the 2003 NatWest Island Games when he unveiled a countdown clock
in the High Street.
The clock revealed that there were
just two hundred and eighteen days remaining before the start of
the opening ceremony in St Peter Port harbour on June 28th next
year.
Sir de Vic praised the Guernsey organising
committee for the progress made so far in developing the facilities
at Beau Sejour and Foote’s Lane and said that he had every confidence
that the island will be ready to host what will be the biggest tournament
in the competition’s seventeen year history.
Peter Marchant, NatWest island director,
thanked the Bailiff and said that everyone at the bank was delighted
to be involved in supporting the Xth Island Games:
He said: ‘It is a fantastic competition and everyone at NatWest
is determined to play their part in bringing the islands together.
‘Every year the competition gets bigger
and next year’s competition looks like being the biggest and hopefully
the best yet.’
Guernsey is expecting to host over
2,500 athletes, coaches, officials, and supporters from 23 competing
islands.
The countdown clock will be housed
in the banking hall of NatWest’s High Street branch.
A second clock will be displayed at
the Beau Sejour sports centre.
