IGA CHAIRMAN PRAISES
PEOPLE OF GUERNSEY.

The Chairman of the International Island Games Association, Bo Frykenstam, has praised the people of Guernsey for their hospitality, and the local Organising Committee for their professionalism and attention to detail, following the recent NatWest Island Games.

Mr Frykenstam said a vote of thanks was also due to the Bailiff and States of Guernsey as well as the nearby islands of Herm, Alderney and Sark, which had hosted mountain bike, football and shooting events.

He believed the Games was going from strength to strength as shown by the fact that three islands - Saaremaa, Ynys Mon and Aland - had all submitted letters of intent, signifying their wish to bid for the 2009 event. Two islands had been in the running for the 2007 Games, which were eventually allocated to Rhodes.

Next venue for the gathering is in Shetland in 2005 and representatives were present in Guernsey to give a progress report to executive committee members, and delegates, regarding the current position with arrangements and facilities.

Mr Frykenstam said the opportunity had been taken in Guernsey, at official level, to discuss the long-term aims and objectives of the Games. Members of the executive committee had also met with competitors from member islands to seek their views as to the way ahead for the event and to address any concerns they had.

The election of officers at the IGA meeting saw a new Honorary Medical Adviser joining the executive committee. He is Dr. Carl Clinton from Jersey to whom a warm welcome was extended by the chairman and members of the IGA.

Officers elected were - Chairman: Bo Frykenstam; Vice-Chairman: Brian Partington; Treasurer: Eric Legg; Executive Committee members: Jorgen Pettersson, James Johnston and Jaan Lember;
Hon. Legal Advisor: Geoff Karran; Hon Medical Advisor: Dr Carl Clinton.
The appointed General Secretary: Kay Batty;
