SPECIAL SPORTS GRANT FOR CAYMAN
AFTER HURRICANE IVAN STRIKES
The International Island Games Association has
rallied round to help Cayman with its Shetland Games involvement
following the devastating impact on the Caribbean of hurricane
Ivan last September.
The hurricane left a trail of damage in its wake and the cost
of the clear-up and re-building operation meant it was difficult
for the Cayman Islands Games Association to obtain sponsors for
their participation in July’s NatWest Island Games.
The size of the team had to be reduced by about half, resulting
in many of its top young sportspeople being denied the opportunity
of competing in the Games. However, the executive committee of
the IIGA considered the situation to see what it could do to help.
Chairman Bo Frykenstam explained: “The executive committee agreed
that, as a gesture of support and solidarity to a member island,
the Association should award a special grant to Cayman from the
NatWest Sports Development Programme.
“The £2,500 grant will now enable Cayman to send two more
of its young and promising athletes – one male and one female –
to the Games.”
