XI NatWest Island Games held on Shetland
a great success
The retiring chairman of International Island
Games Association (IGA), mr. Bo Frykenstam from Gotland, congratulates the
people of Shetland for the organisation of the XI NatWest Island Games which
closed on Friday 15th July.
Thousands of competitors and spectators at Gilbertson Park in Lerwick heard
the chairman thanking the organisers, sportspeople, volunteers and many more
in his last closing ceremony speech.
”I call upon each of you to keep the spirit of the Friendly Games alive”,
mr Frykenstam said.
Bo Frykenstam has served the IGA since the start of the Games 1985 in Isle
of Man, the last four years as chairman.
The last decision made by the Executive Committee under the leadership of
Bo Frykenstam was to sign up to the Wada-code.
”I am very pleased that we finally have arrived to that decision”, mr.
Frykenstam said.
New chairman after the NatWest Island Games in Shetland will be vice
chairman Brian Partington (Isle of Man). The new vice chairman will be
Jorgen Pettersson
(Aland). The treasurer Eric Legg (Guernsey) was re-elected as was executive
committee member James Johnston (Shetland). New members in the committee
are Anu Vares (Saaremaa) and Donna Jones (Ynys Mon).
Brian Partington is determined to continue to develop IGA in a controlled
way. New member island Menorca will compete in the next Games bringing the
number of islands to 25.
”We expect all our members to have a full team in Rhodes 2007 and with the
increased media interest and standards of competition the development of
sport and facilities is growing quickly in all our islands”, he said.
