The Countdown Begins!

Rhodes Island Games Countdown ClockGeorge Giannopoulos, Mayor of Rhodes and Brian Partington, Chairman of the International Island Games Association

A clock counting down to the opening of the NatWest Island Games in Rhodes next year has been placed above the entrance to the Town hall in Rhodes and was unveiled today (Monday 10th July). The ceremony was the culmination of a successful preview visit by members of the International Games Association ahead of next year’s Games.

The unveiling was performed by the Mayor of Rhodes, George Giannopoulos and the Chairman of the Island Games Association, Brian Partington, who says,

‘We have been very impressed with the attention to detail demonstrated by the Organising Committee in Rhodes, not only with regard to our visit this week but with the arrangements for next year’s event. All delegates received a comprehensive booklet which included information necessary for both team managers and competitors.

‘The Executive Committee of the IGA are confident that all facilities will be in place by the time of the Games and that participants will enjoy superb competitions.’

The Annual General Meeting of the International Island Games Association (IGA) was held on Saturday 8 July in the Esperos Palace Hotel, which will form the hub of the Games Village.  Delegates from Prince Edward Island confirmed their intention to bid to host the 2013 Games along with Bermuda - who had just lost the 2011 Games to the Isle of Wight.

Following discussion the Membership decided not to increase the number of Member Islands (currently 25) for the moment.

Earlier in the week a very informative Medical Seminar was held which focused on acclimatisation and sun safety issues for the 2007 competitors together with an update on Anti-doping by WADA (World Anti-doping Agency).
