Executive Committee Meeting, St Helier, Jersey, March 19 – 23 2007

The Executive Committee of the International Island Games Association returned to Jersey to hold their 2007 Spring Meeting.  The Executive’s last visit had been in 1997 the memorable year that Jersey hosted the Island Games at which over 2000 competitors and officials took part.  1997 also saw the launch of the successful partnership with sponsors NatWest.  

The NatWest Island Games Xll to be held in Rhodes this summer will attract an estimated 3,200 sports people to compete in the ‘Friendly Games’ that bring islands together from all over the world.  

During the Executive’s visit to Jersey, which was in response to an invitation from the Island Games Association of Jersey, they met with the political leadership of the Island, officials and members of the IGAJ as well as competitors representing the Games sports.   The Executive also visited Alderney and were warmly welcomed by their politicians, officials of Alderney IGA and a representative from their sports.

Amongst the items on the agenda for the Executive Committee Meeting was an in-depth progress report from the Rhodes Games Organising Committee Chairperson Ms Lee Minaidis. Although some work still remains to be completed, the Executive were assured that Rhodes will be ready for the NatWest Island Games on the 30 June 2007 when the Opening Ceremony will be held in the Ancient Stadium of Rhodes.

The Executive Committee also received progress reports from the Organising Committee of the NatWest Island Games in Åland 2009 and for the Isle of Wight 2011.
